Congratulations, Willie

Last Sunday morning, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared the incumbent Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano, winner of the November 18 Guber Poll. According to the INEC declared results, Obiano polled a total of 234, 071 votes to beat his closest rival, Tony Nwoye of All Progressives Congress, APC, who polled 98, 757 votes. The third candidate, Oseloka Obaze, of People's Democratic Party, PDP, polled 70, 593 votes.
In emerging victorious, Obiano won in all the 21 Local Government areas of the state, an unprecedented feat by any candidate.
Obiano's victory and the manner it was achieved, show that the people of the state believed in his achievements in the first tenure and decided to keep faith with him for another four years.
We heartily congratulate our governor on his landmark victory. We also congratulate the electoral umpire, INEC, for keeping faith with the mandate of the people, despite initial and late fears of possible manipulation of results to favour a particular candidate and party. We equally congratulate the security personnel whose vigilance ensured that no lives were lost against the backdrop of threats by pro-Biafra groups to stop people from turning up for the election.
We however want to plead with security authorities to withdraw their officers as the election is over. These officers can be seen squatting at various places and their continued presence may lead to problems with the civilian population who may soon begin to see them as an army of occupation. We would not like anything to mar what has been otherwise a very peaceful election. We are satisfied that the November 18 Poll was free, fair and credible.
That said, we also wish to urge the victor in the election, Willie Obiano, not to see this moment as one to gloat or ridicule his opponents. He should rather see this moment as an opportunity to play the statesman and build bridges of friendship and cooperation. We are happy to note that in his acceptance speech he extended a hand of fellowship to his opponents in a bid to serve the state better.
We also by the same token urge his opponents to consider working with the governor for the interest of the state. There should be no litigations for the sake of such, unless anyone has concrete proof of anomalies. The state can be spared of distractions that will be caused by meaningless distractions in the form of court cases.
Now that his second tenure is in the bag, we urge the governor to reciprocate the faith of the masses in him by not resting on his oars in making life better for all Anambra people. There should be no discriminations. Everybody and every community must be carried along. If anything, this second opportunity should be used by Obiano to further develop the state. This and only this will guarantee Obiano a special place in the hearts of the people long after he has gone.
Once more, we offer him our warmest regards and congratulations.
