Last Tuesday and Wednesday, Awka, the Anambra State capital, bubbled for the right reasons. All roads led to Dora Akunyili Women's Development Centre for the maiden Media Summit by the Anambra State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, led by Comrade Emmanuel Ifesinachi. The two-day event drew the crème de la crème of resource persons in Nigeria, who included, Cee Don Adinuba, Fidelis Anosike, Uche Ezechukwu, Uche Nworah, Prof Stella Okunna, Prof Segun Odugbesan, Oseloka Obaze and Prof Godwin Onu. It was such an enriching experience.
The success story of the summit is testament to the new spirit in the Anambra NUJ which has lifted it from the doldrums of the recent past to the limelight.
Emma Ifesinachi and his team should be credited with the new heights the council has attained. They have been able to revive the interest of members and have gone the extra mile in seeking out and exploiting the strengths of members for the benefit of the council.
Under this regime, congresses are being held regularly, as well as seminars to enrich the knowledge and competence of members. Now in partnership with Nnamdi Azikiwe University, the NUJ, Anambra Council, is running a diploma programme for Journalists in the state who have not been able to acquire it. This, certainly, is a step in the right direction.
It was in an effort to better the image and fortunes of the council that the NUJ executive hit upon the idea of the media summit. This was an event that more than any other thing, shored up the image of the council in a very positive way. It was an event that also boosted the state's image positively.
This is saying thanks to the indefatigable team that organised the summit led by Mrs Uche Amunike. They worked tirelessly to ensure that the summit succeeded. This was achieved at the expense of their jobs. But now that the summit has come and gone, it is time to give recognition to deserving people. And without doubt, the leadership of NUJ in Anambra State and the Media Summit Committee should come in for special mention.
What they have done through this Media Summit has surely marked a turning point in the affairs of the council in the state.
We also thank the Anambra State Government for her financial assistance to the council to ensure the success of the event.
It is hoped that the gains of this event will be consolidated upon in subsequent years to the glory of the council and the state.
