Onitsha North Local Government Female Team was on Friday 5th May, crowned Champion in the 2nd Edition of Gov. Willie Obiano Unity Cup. In the fierce game between the Onitsha North and Nnewi South, which was played at the Rojenny International Stadium, Oba, the Onitsha North team, showed the spirit of Champion with a lone strike by Ngozi Owuama in the early minutes of the first half.
Speaking while handing over the trophies to the winners, Governor Willie Obiano, noted that Anambra State will produce team that will compete internationally and win trophies for the state next year. According to the Governor, "we have the talent and we will harness them, and that will happen here in Rojenny, Oba".
The Governor stated that his administration is interested in fishing out and harnessing potential talents in football, noting that very soon, the second Edition of the Anambra State Schools Academicals Football Competition, for both primary and secondary schools, will kick off. Governor Obiano went further to thank all who trooped out in their numbers to watch the game. Also speaking, the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Youth Entrepreneurship and Sports Development, Anambra State, Dr Barr (Mrs.) Uju Nwogu, commended the teams that made it to the finals for the spirit of good sportsmanship they exhibited during and after the games.
According to Commissioner Nwogu, "this tournament was organized to galvanize and bring together all youths in the 179 communities of the state, harness budding talents, take them off the streets, get them meaningfully engaged and bring leisure to the grassroots". She equally commended the teams and players that participated in the tournament, urging them to come and register in the next edition of the Gov. Willie Obiano Unity Cup, which according to her, will commence soon.
Meanwhile, in the second match, Nnewi North Male Team, defeated Onitsha North male team 1-0, to emerge champion through penalty by Obinna Okeledo in the second half of the game. More so, Ihiala L.G.A, defeated Anaocha L.G.A to emerge third in the male category while in the female cadre, Ekwusigo L.G.A, emerged second runner up after beating Awka South Local Government Area.
However, for emerging winners in the competition, Nnewi North and Onitsha North went home with #500,000 each, while Onitsha North and Nnewi South went home with #300,000 each, as Ihiala L.G.A and Ekwusigo L.G.A, cart home with #200,000 each for emerging 3rd in the tournament, amongst so many other consolation prizes.
