The 2017 Edition of the Priests' Biennial Sports Competition of Awka Diocese, kicked off on March 28, 2017 at St Anthony's Catholic Church, Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area Anambra State.
The ceremonial kick off of the competition was done by the Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev Paulinus Ezeokafor alongside his Auxiliary, Most Rev Jonass-Benson Okoye and the Catholic Bishop of Ahiara Diocese, Most Rev Peter Okpaleke. The opening match of the competition was played between Team Bishop Ezokafor and Team Bishop Okoye. The match ended with Team Ezeokafor defeating Team Bishop Okoye by three goals to two. While in Volleyball, Team Bishop Okpaleke defeated Selected Lay Volleyball by two sets to one.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, the Catholic Bishop of Awka, Most Rev Ezeokafor commended the Director of Sports Rev Fr Coach Obinna Dike for his sports apostolate and urged others to emulate him. He said that the aim of the competition was to promote healthy living since sport helps in the development of physique and bodily development for improved efficiency in physical and mental endeavours. He also noted that those who do not actively participate in sports can gain by being spectators.
Team Bishop Ezeokafor
In his own remarks, the Auxiliary Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev Jonas-Benson Okoye thanked all the priests who participated in the competition for their efforts, and for coming out to take part in the competition. He also thanked those who are sponsoring the competition as well as; Engr. Barth Nwibe who is sponsoring Tennis with Five Hundred Thousand Naira and Rev Fr Innocent Nwankwo who is sponsoring Table Tennis.
Team Bishop Okoye
The DOSAD Director, Rev Fr Coach Obinna Dike commended the Bishops for making out time to be part of the opening ceremony for the competition. He applauded all the teams that participated in the competition for their efforts. He applauded the host priest and DOSAD Football Academy host Fr Damian Ogwatta, his vicars and parishioners for their dedication to diocesan sports initiatives.
The flag off kick started a month practice period for regions. The main competitions start May 7, 2017.
