Awka Diocesan Catholic Primary Schools in Anaocha L.G.A of Anambra State have kicked off the 2017 edition of their Annual Football Tournament with Migrants Farmers School, Neni defeating Ezeokwudo Primary School Neni, 2-1and Special Primary School, Neni defeating Eziaja Primary School, Neni 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the opening matches.
The football tournament which kicked off at St John's Catholic Church Field, Neni, Anaocha L.G.A on July 13, 2017, was declared open with a ceremonial kick off by the sponsor of the competition, Sir Edwin Obiora Ezeude in the presence of the Education Secretary of Anaocha L.G.A, Mrs. Imelda Egbeama and the local government sports officer, Mrs. Offiah, among others.
Speaking to Fides, the sponsor, Sir Ezeude, said his passion for sports spurred him to sponsor the football tournament for the Awka Diocesan Primary Schools in Anaocha L.G.A, saying that the tournament would develop the sporting talents of the pupils for their better future.
Ezeude, who traced his sports experience from his childhood, said he participated in football, shot put, javelin, and discuss through, tug of war, and was the champion in the Teachers' Training South East Football Competition in 1963. He pointed out that Neni has some well known sports men like Power Mike, Mikel Obi and Matthias Obianika of Rangers as well as celebrated Game Masters of 1970-1976. This was even as he registered his displeasure over the decline in sports in Neni and in Anambra State in general.

He said that football tournament which is part of his contributions to sports development in Neni, was in honour of his deceased father, late Ezeude. Sir Edwin Ezeude donated a trophy for the tournament and advised parents to encourage their children's participation in sports, saying that such would aid their development and make them popular in future.

Speaking on the occasion, the Education Secretary of Anaocha L.G.A, Mrs. Imelda Egbeama thanked the organizer and sponsor of the tournament, Sir Ezeude for initiating and sponsoring the mother of all sports competition for Awka Diocesan Primary Schools in Anaocha L.G.A.
Pointing out that the primary school age was a good age to catch the children young for their effective development congratulated the schools that participated in the tournament for their successful outing. She encouraged those that lost in the opening match to put in more effort in subsequent matches and competitions.
