In a bid to promote grass root sports development in Anambra State, the State Governor, Willie Obiano is set to organize and sponsor a soccer tournament called, 'Gov. Obiano Unity Cup' which is scheduled to kick off soon.
The Commissioner for Youth Entrepreneurship and  Sports Development Anambra State, Barr. Uju Nworgu, made this known during the press briefing and inauguration of the subcommittee members last week Thursday, 3rd August, 2017 at the State Ministry of Sports Office Awka. She welcomed all and charged committee members to do their best in uplifting the the competition.
She said that the competition will pave way for grass roots development where talented footballers will be selected and exposed to international matches. She added that consolation prizes will be awarded to players and groups with outstanding performances. She said too that both the male and female teams will actively participate in the competition to make it more entertaining and exciting.
Barr. Uju Nworgu, charged journalists to show robust publicity of the game; adding that the competition was aimed at fostering unity among all arms of the state. She said the competition was also aimed at complementing the efforts of the state government in uplifting sports.
The chairman of the Main Organizing Committee (MOC), Barr. JBC Obikwelu revealed that all the communities in Anambra state will actively participate in the competition including other groups like Nigeria Army, Police, Prison, NYSC, Immigrations, Universities and other Institutions.
In his remarks, Obiekwelu who spoke on behalf of other committee members thanked the state governor for unveiling such opportunity for Anambrarians. He assured the commissioner for sports that the competition will aim at a world class taste. He therefore, enjoined all and sundry to put all hands on deck to ensure the success of the championship in honour of the sport loving governor and as a mark of patriotic support and unity of the state.
Responding to this, the Chairman of all Local Football Chairmen, Chuks Ndigwe assured the commissioner that the tournament will be one of the greatest so far in the state.
