A total of 2, 156, 171 registered voters will participate in the November 18 Governorship Election in Anambra State.
Making this known was the Southeast Supervisory National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Okechukwu Ibeanu, at the formal presentation of the list of registered voters for the Nov poll.
Disclosing that the commission had a total number of 2,156,171 registered voters ahead of the November 18 Election in Anambra State, Prof Ibeanu appreciated the support of security agencies in ensuring peace in the current electioneering period.
He described the Anambra State Governorship Election as the most highly contested in Nigeria with 37 candidates and commended the political parties for the peaceful conduct of nomination exercises and campaigns so far, urging them to sustain the tempo.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Nkwachukwi Orji, who presented the compiled publication of registered voters in Awka, said the exercise was in compliance with Section 34 of the Electoral Act, 2010, which provides for the publication of the voters' register for a period not less than 30 days before Election Day.
He expressed satisfaction with the Commission's commitment to follow all legal requirements and disclosed that INEC had mapped out 27th to 29th of October for the collection of permanent voters cards, urging the electorate to visit their registration centres to obtain their voters cards.
Responding, some of the representatives of the political parties, Chief Edward Okoye, Sir Justin Amechi and Mr. Arthur Reages, expressed satisfaction with the preparedness of INEC and urged them to endeavour to work with the approved number of registered voters to achieve a free, fair and credible election in the state
