In a bid to complement the effort of the Catholic Diocese of Awka in ensuring the immediate take off and absorption of the prospective university population, the Onneh Community through her Patriotic Union, has commenced internal road constructions within the community.
The road constructions which started in the month of May 2017, were to link villages in the community and open up a new layout that will attract investors to ensure the development of the rural community and position the university as the most sought after by students in Nigeria.
Speaking to Fides, the President General of Onneh Community and conceiver of the project, Hon Uchenna Maduike, explained that the road constructions were to assist the University Community and Catholic Diocese of Awka, in particular, in attracting investors that would specialize in the development of commercial houses to serve as students' residential area to absorb the population of students, regardless of the number.
He noted that students were most likely to apply to Universities within urban cities, rather than coming to ones in villages and expressed the hope that the new site opened up in Onneh would facilitate other developmental projects and make the area fit for students' existence in order to ensure that the social aspect of students life tallied with the academic and moral excellence to be offered by the church.
Hon. Maduike maintained that the new layout would boost food production in the area and help farmers to diversify in agriculture.
The new layout, according to the PG, will also contain an industrial layout to enable people who interested in industries to start up both on small and big scale levels.
The road constructions will also decongest the palm oil industries currently located within the residential areas in order to reduce the hazardous effects on human health.
Maduike said that a portion of land had been marked out for industrial development to ensure that people interested in industrialisation could start up.
He disclosed plans to carry out maintenance work on the existing dilapidated roads within the community, noting that the road constructions embarked upon by the community were their little quota to assist the good efforts of Governor Willie Obiano's administration in community development.
He praised Governor Obiano for initiating the 20 million Naira community projects in the state, saying that Onneh Community would soon complete its health centre project.
He said the main aim of their effort was to add to what the Catholic Church was already doing in developing the community.
Two members of the community, Celestine Okorie and Ndubuisi Nsofor, thanked the PG for coming up with the project, saying that Onneh would no longer go through Ogboji while moving from one village to another.
