The grand finale of the 2017 Inter-House Sports Competition of the prestigious Catholic Diocese of Awka-owned Bubendorff Memorial Grammar School (BMGS), Adazi-Nnukwu, Anaocha L.G.A, Anambra State has ended with Engr. John Arachie’s (Orange) House and Igwe Prof Augustine Obiekezie’s (Lemon Green) House defeating other 10 houses of the school to lift the giant overall champion trophy with 51% each.
Engr. Arachie’s House also won the trophies for the volleyball and March past competitions while Engr. Theodore Ezekwe’s (Red) House defeated Hon Andy Umeoji’s (Green) House with a 2-1 win in the football finals to lift the trophy for the mother of all games.
The inter-house sports competition which was held at the BMGS Field in conjunction with the Directorate of Sports Awka Diocese (DOSAD) on May 12, 2017, doubled with unveiling of the proposed Catholic Diocese of Awka Mega Sports Centre. The proposed sports centre when completed will have the following as its special features: a main bowl (football field with grass) and eight tracks, pavilion for over 2000 sitting capacity, a basket ball court, a volleyball court, a double lawn tennis court and a badminton court.
Other special features of the proposed sports centre included dressing rooms and convenience rooms, a mini hall for gym and indoor games, a borehole, a mini eatery and parking lot. The sports centre was unveiled by the Executive Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Dr Willie Obiano, who was represented by the Chairman of Anaocha L.G.A, Hon Engr Ikeobi Ejiofor.
Speaking on the occasion, the school proprietor and Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev Dr Paulinus Chukwuemeka Ezeokafor, who was represented by the chancellor of the diocese, Rev Fr Francis Chidume, extolled the school management led by the manager, Rev Fr Chukwuedozie Theodore Ekwem for the unprecedented development of the institution. The bishop stated the readiness of the church for a continuous working partnership with the Anambra State Government for qualitative education of the young ones.
On his part, the school manager, Rev Fr Theodore Ekwem commended the old boys of the institution for their unrelenting goodwill, supports and donations which have made the many recent developments which BMGS has to her credit possible.
He extolled the following Awka Diocesan Catholic priests, who are old boys of BMGS-Rev Fr Ignatius Onwuatuegwu, Episcopal Vicar, Ekwulobia Region; Rev Fr Charles Umeoji, Dean, Neni Deanery; Rev Fr MacBen Okeke, parish priest, St Patrick’s Parish, Ndiowu; Rev Fr Moses Iloka and Rev Fr Nnamdi Ojiakor for the renewable trophies they donated for the school's annual inter-house sports competition.
In his remarks, the chairman of the occasion and chairman of Anaocha L.G.A, Anambra State, Hon Engr Ikeobi Ejiofor (KSJI) expressed his delight to be part of the school which according to him has been able to develop, nurture and produce eminent citizens of Anaocha L.G.A and Anambra State.
Hon Ejiofor, who is a 1996 alumnus of the school, lauded the school proprietor and the school manager for the impressive growth attained by his alma mater within a short while of its return to the church by the Government of Anambra State, saying that the current BMGS is a representation of Fr Theo's effect.
Ejiofor called on the Anambra State Government under Dr Willie Obiano, the old boys, PTA and all lovers of education and sports to support the Catholic Diocese of Awka and BMGS in actualizing the dream of the proposed mega sports centre. He added that the sports centre which will be strategically located at the heart of the state would contribute to youth development when completed.
Among other dignitaries that graced the historic double event were the Chairman of Post Primary School Service Commission (PPSSC), Anambra State, Lady Joy Ulasi; the Anambra State Head of Service and the patron of the White House of the school, Barry Udu, who was represented by a director of the commission, Lady O. Nwandu.
Other dignitaries were some of the patrons of the houses who included Professor Josephat Okechukwu Ogbuagu, mni (sponsor of Sky Blue House), who was represented by his PA, Barr Chinedu Nwafor as well as the former Anambra State Commissioner for Works, Arc Sir Calistus Ilozumba, KSS and his brother Dr Philip Ilozumba, who graced the event in honour of their late father and sponsor of the Blue House, Benjamin O. Ilozumba.
Presentation of prizes to the winners of the track and field events and donations in support of the school projects were highlights of the event.
