General Hospital, Umueri, in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State, was a beehive of activities recently as the member representing Anambra East State Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, who is also the House Committee Chairman on Budget and Appropriation, Hon. (Pharm.) Obinna Chris Emenaka, flagged off his Annual Free Medical Outreach, with over one thousand indigenes of Umueri benefitting from the lawmaker's gesture.
The Free Medical Outreach, Fides gathered, was managed by a team of medical personnel from the Ukraine.
During the exercise, patients were diagnosed with and treated of various ailments, including cardiovascular risk factors, such as high cholesterol, obesity and diabetes, as well as malaria, osteoarthritis, pains and inflammations.
Addressing the beneficiaries and personalities at the event, the benefactor, Chief Obinna Emenaka, explained that the free medical outreach, which he did in partnership with the ministry of health, was an annual ritual aimed at building a healthy community by preventing crises associated with complications of illness when unattended to.
Hon Emenaka, who stated that it was also designed to give the people of Umueri a sense of belonging, particularly those  too poor to finance adequate health care, added that the free medical outreach would be extended to Nsugbe, UmuobaAnam, Aguleri, Igbariam and Nando, respectively.
Speaking after flagging off the exercise, the Commissioner for Health, Dr.JosephatAkabuike, who described Emenaka as a philanthropist of note, revealed that the state Government was doing everything possible to make sure that the health system was strengthened so that the people could have access to health without recourse to money.
To achieve that, Dr.Akabuike disclosed that government had earmarked two billion naira for the Anambra State Universal Health Insurance Scheme which would give the less privileged access to quality health care, adding that Umueri General Hospital had been selected as one of the hospitals to be used for the exercise.
In his remarks, the traditional ruler of Umueri, Igwe Ben Emeka, commended the benefactor, Hon Emenaka, for using the free medical outreach to meet the health needs of the people of Umueri.
Some of the beneficiaries, Mr. Peter Ezinwa, Mrs Monica Akwuobi and Mrs Grace Anaedu, all thanked the benefactor for his kind gesture.
