After about ten years that their status in the National University Commission (NUC) was queried and subsequently removed from the NUC, the status of the staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Nursery / Primary School, Awka alongside other universities counterparts was recently reversed following a ruling by the labour court sitting in Abuja.
Making this known in an interview granted to Fides when she led the staff of the school to a thanksgiving at St Joseph the Worker's Catholic Chaplaincy, Nnamdi Azikwe University (NAU), Awka recently, the head teacher of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Nursery / Primary School, Awka, Dr (Mrs) Nkoli Ejesi said the Federal Ministry of Education in 2006 declared the staff of all universities nursery / primary schools in Nigeria no longer part of the National University Commission (NUC).
According to Dr Mrs Ejesi, following the removal from NUC, which no reason was given for the decision, the federal government stopped paying the salaries of the staff of all Nigerian universities nursery/ primary schools. Each university had since been paying the salaries of the staff.
She said the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) went to court on their behalf and subsequently in January 2017, the labour court sitting in Abuja ruled in their favour and the status of the staff of all Nigerian universities nursery/ primary schools in the NUC was reversed.
Dr Ejesi said while the matter was in court, they (staff of UNIZIK Nursery / Primary School, Awka) resorted to prayers and promised God bountiful thanksgiving of one cow each to a Catholic Church, an Anglican Church and a Pentecostal Church once He (God) answers their prayers.
The UNIZIK nursery / primary school head teacher appreciated the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Joseph Ahaneku, FAS for the hope he gave them and his insistence that they would not lose their rights as the staff of the university. Ejesi said while some affected schools sent their teachers packing and recruited new ones, some others did not pay their teachers, Professor Ahaneku saw to it that they were paid. She said they were at St Joseph the Worker's Catholic Chaplaincy, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka for thanksgiving in fulfillment of the promise they made to God.
